Hangar 7\u00a0at Salzburg Airport\u00a0is by no means a normal hangar; it is one of Salzburg\u2032s contemporary top-attractions. A private airport hangar owned by the founder of the energy drink company\u00a0“Red Bull”, Dietrich Mateschitz. \u00a0It was built for hosting his private aeroplane collection. \u00a0 The display\u00a0consists of a growing number of small, not so small and some large historic and contemporary planes, helicopters and several vehicles such as Red Bull racing cars.<\/p>\n

A formerly used hangar did not provide sufficient space for the unique collection and the Red Bull hanger was finally opened in 2003.<\/p>\n

The building is airfoil shaped, constructed of 1,200 tons of steel and 75,000 sqft of glass surface. \u00a0 Every piece of glass was individually custom made in China and no one is exactly the same shape as any other in the dome.\u00a0 In total there are 1 754 pieces of glass with a total weight of 380 tons. \u00a0The hanger is 14.5 metres high at its top and the steel frame is holding the glass weight of 1 200 tons.\u00a0 Maybe Red Bull really gives you wings?<\/p>\n

Some Red Bull F1 cars supplement the mostly aviation exhibition. \u00a0When we visited it was Raikonen’s (The Ice Man) and Herbert\u2019s cars that joined the exhibit space.<\/p>\n

Situated near the Salzburg Airport it is easily accessible and tourists can visit Hanger 7 free or charge. \u00a0The hanger often hosts art exhibitions as well as concerts so check before you want to visit.<\/p>\n

This is worth a trip when you are in the area, but will not keep you occupied for long. \u00a0 Unfortunately we were pressed for time and could only manage a quick visit at night so photo opportunities were limited.<\/p>\n
