{"id":412,"date":"2014-11-03T15:25:01","date_gmt":"2014-11-03T13:25:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/?p=412"},"modified":"2019-02-26T09:24:10","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T07:24:10","slug":"st-georges-park-walk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/st-georges-park-walk\/","title":{"rendered":"A WALK IN ST GEORGE&#8217;S PARK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today we opted to walk instead of drive in our exploring stint.\u00a0 A leisurely afternoon stroll (actually in search of a geocache) took us to the historic St George\u2019s Park and surroundings to learn and appreciate a bit of history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Our first stop was at the historic Port Elizabeth Cricket Club (PECC) which was established in 1859 where a club match was underway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-414\" src=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"kerke 020\" width=\"487\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020-600x450.jpg 600w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020-190x142.jpg 190w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020-60x45.jpg 60w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-020-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The grounds boast a couple of unique achievements such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>being the second oldest cricket club in South Africa;<\/li>\n<li>being the venue for the first cricket test<\/li>\n<li>the first women\u2019s international Test<\/li>\n<li>the last Test before South Africa was expelled from world cricket<\/li>\n<li>the first ever test series win against Australia<\/li>\n<li>the first Rebel test was played here<\/li>\n<li>and last but not least it is the sixth oldest cricket ground in the world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0In 2003 it was only the second season that PECC and Crusaders Rugby Club did not share their turf during summer and winter respectively.\u00a0 The Eastern Province Cricket Board could not afford to have the field badly churned up by rugby boots just before the 2003 Cricket World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-413\" src=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-018-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"kerke 018\" width=\"485\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-018-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-018-600x450.jpg 600w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-018-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-018-190x142.jpg 190w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-018-60x45.jpg 60w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-018-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Famous cricketers from PECC are Peter and Graeme Pollock, Dave Callaghan and Gavin Cowley.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Out of the stadium and on towards our next point of interest which is the St George\u2019s Preparatory School just opposite the tennis club.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Knockfierna (Hill of Fairies or Truth) was originally built in 1899 as a beautiful grand Victorian Mansion by John Daverin, from Ireland, who was a successful Wool Merchant. John and his wife, Clothilda, brought up their 7 children in the grand style befitting this era.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-415\" src=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"St George Preparatory School\" width=\"486\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021-600x450.jpg 600w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021-190x142.jpg 190w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021-60x45.jpg 60w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-021-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sadly there is only a dilapidated building left \u00a0of the tennis club as it had to make way for the refurbishing during the 2003 World Cricket tournament.\u00a0 The Port Elizabeth Lawn Tennis Club (PELTC) in St George\u2019s Park was founded in 1879 making it the oldest active tennis club in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0But on with our stroll.\u00a0 We made a quick detour to see what\u00a0 the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Gallery offers which, to our surprise, was open on a Saturday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As we were exiting the gallery I saw the War Memorial and gave it the due respects.\u00a0 \u00a0This was the halfway mark of our stroll.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-416\" src=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"kerke 025\" width=\"488\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025-600x450.jpg 600w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025-190x142.jpg 190w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025-60x45.jpg 60w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-025-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0The geocaching walk took us to the public swimming pool which is sparkling clean and attendants on duty at the entrance (and they were not sleeping!). \u00a0\u00a0Entry to the pool is a mere R9 however I spotted only two elderly bathers.\u00a0 The gardens in front of the pool is bright and colourful and creates a real summer atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-417\" src=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"kerke 028\" width=\"488\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028-600x450.jpg 600w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028-190x142.jpg 190w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028-60x45.jpg 60w, http:\/\/travelbucket.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kerke-028-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next was Prince Alfred\u2019s Guard memorial. It was erected in 1907 in remembrance to men from the guard that died in four different wars.
