Another of my favourite Sophy Gray churches. The plans for St Mark’s were based on Littlemore Church, near Oxford in England. Three stonemasons were used to build the church and it was completed in 13 months. The windows might be the oldest in South Africa as it dates back to before Van Riebeeck arrived in the Cape of Good Hope. It was recovered from a church in Germany during the French Revolution, brought to England and then found its way to South Africa.

St. Francis Xavier Church in Melacca, Malaysia was built in 1856, in honour of St. Francis Xavier, a prominent 16th-century Catholic missionary. The church was believed to be modelled after the Cathedral of St. Peter in Southern France, Montpellier, which followed closely the older church’s original construction, except for a portico which was later added in 1963. To date St Francis Xavier Church still serves its function as a Catholic church, with regular mass services.

The Dutch Reformed Church in Graaff Reinet. Constructed between April 1886 and consecrated in 1887, the church is loosely modeled on Salisbury Cathedral in England. It must have been irritating to the townspeople when the nearby town of Aberdeen finished a church with a taller steeple! They say this Dutch Reformed Church is the only known church in South Africa and possibly in the world to have a kitchen and a chimney.

The congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church, Stellenbosch was established in 1686. The church building was consecrated in 1723 after the first building was destroyed in a fire in 1710. The cross church was enlarged in 1863. Burials were initially permitted under the church floor. About 100 people were buried inside the church before the floor was tiled. In 1801 the first crypts were allowed outside the church building. This continued until 1849 when the first municipal cemetery was opened.

The Anglican Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin stands just off Market Square next to the old Public Library in Port Elizabeth. This is another one of th 53 Sophie Gray designs. The church was gutted in a fire in 1895 through a demented pyromaniac, Mary Livingston Johnstone, who also set the Hill Presbyterian Church ablaze and attempted to do the same at St. Augustine’s. She was later sent to Robben Island. The fire resulted in the church being remodeled into the layout existing today.
