The Anglican Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin stands just off Market Square next to the old Public Library in Port Elizabeth. This is another one of th 53 Sophie Gray designs. The church was gutted in a fire in 1895 through a demented pyromaniac, Mary Livingston Johnstone, who also set the Hill Presbyterian Church ablaze and attempted to do the same at St. Augustine’s. She was later sent to Robben Island. The fire resulted in the church being remodeled into the layout existing today.oOo
The Anglican Cathedral of St Michaels and St George stands in the heart of Grahamstown. Building work on the cathedral started way back in 1824 already and lasted for more than 100 years.oOo

This view caught my eye as I entered into this small church of St Patrick’s on the Hill in Hogsback. In the garden is a stone arch with a brass bell that stands as a memorial for the Rev Dr Bride Dixon, first woman priest in South Africa, and doctor on the mountain for many years.
