A MARINE ODYSSEY

Today we were up early and getting the troops ready for our boating trip with Ocean Odyssey in Knysna compliments of #visitknysna.  The weather was looking a bit greyish when we departed from home base, but it turned out to be a beautiful day in Knysna.  How lucky we are! Now our family are not sea people at all, but this trip however was on our to do list for some time, but somehow, we never got around to do it.  We prefer the bush and greenery of the forest if we have a choice but are ALWAYS open for something new and eventful.    Back to our sea expedition.  As always, we arrived a bit early so there was enough time before the trip to use our coffee vouchers at nearby Trinity Coffee.  This gave us enough sustenance to be happy on our expedition.  The welcome and safety briefing was… Read more >

TRAVEL MUGS: WE FINALLY FOUND THE RIGHT ONE

One of the things that you will always find in any of our vehicles, is a travel mug.  We have learned over the years to carry them with us wherever we go. We have tried and tested so many different shapes and sizes, makes and models, but we finally found the one! And we simply had to share it with you. Being environmentally conscious, we are constantly aware of the products used in the production of the travel mug and even though the now very popular bamboo cups are better than the styrofoam cups, they too have some bad elements that keep them together such as formaldehyde and melamine, which ends up in your hot drink after a couple of uses.  Therefore, we decided to make use of a silicone cup.  We believe in it so much, that we decided to stock it in our online store. The silicone cup… Read more >

FifFis – GO GREENER BY WASTING LESS FOOD

by Inge Triegaardt Global warming is a real thing, it’s happening!  Right now!  This was my realization when I recently came across FifFis.  I’ve always known about global warming (I mean we have learned all about it when we were at school) and I know that we should all strive to reduce our carbon footprint to not contribute to global warming.  Recently everyone was bombarded with the “NO plastic is fantastic” campaigns and everywhere you turn you see people using alternatives to the single-use plastic items. This is all good.  We are still working on changing our lifestyle to a greener more environmentally friendly lifestyle (we hope you are trying too), but it is difficult at times.  You need to buy new/different and sometimes more expensive products and in today’s economic situation in South Africa, it’s not always possible.  Great was my excitement when I was introduced to FifFis!  It… Read more >

COCOA LIFE – SUSTAINABLE COCOA FARMING

by Inge Triegaardt #cocoalife #smallthingsmatter What are you doing right now? Eating a chocolate while catching up on your reading? Thinking about how good a block of rich and creamy milky chocolate will be right now? If not, you are guaranteed to atleast go and buy a chocolate by the time you have finished reading this article. If you are like us, who still has all our sweet teeth, a slab of chocolate does not last long. The only time you actually look at the outside of the packaging is the time you buy the chocolate and the reason is only to decide which type you want. What about when you are eating it. You don’t think about what you are actually eating. It is pure indulgence while concentrating on something else. Have you ever thought where your block of chocolate started? Where did the process of turning a cocoa… Read more >

SPAR EASTERN CAPE IS JOINING #PlasticFreeJuly

#PlasticFreeJuly is probably the biggest anti-plastic movement for 2019. It is thus comforting to see that big retailers like SPAR Eastern Cape has entered their next phase of STOP Plastic campaign earlier this week. Retailers are the link between manufacturers/distributors and consumers. It is them that thus sub-consciously force us to make better choice, to live a little greener. At a function at the Boardwalk Hotel in Port Elizabeth on Monday, Angelo Swartz, who will soon take over from Conrad Isaac as the SPAR EC managing director, said they were ready to strengthen their commitment to cleaning up the environment. These are no empty promises as SPAR EC has sold 4.3-million fewer plastic bags since the launch of the campaign in April 2018 compared to the corresponding period the previous year. However, both Isaac and Swartz agreed they needed to continue their commitment to the project in collaboration with various… Read more >

SMALL THINGS MATTER

#GlassAndAHalf          #TheLittleGenerosityShop This year we have decided to live our motto that “Small things matter”. During our extensive travels in Africa and closer to home, South Africa, we have seen many scenes that makes you stop and say a little prayer saying thank you for what we have back home! Since the beginnings of our travels, when I was still a child, growing through my teenage years, as a young adult and even now, I’ve always had toys in the car to keep me busy. The only difference was that the toys became more and more expensive the older I got, because I was privileged like that. When you travel through different sections of the continent you very quickly realize just how fortunate you are and that the fluffy toy you wanted to buy from a National park’s curio shop, was in actual fact not necessary…. PARING ELUSIVE FOREST ELEPHANTS AND MYSTICAL PHANTOM GIN

Reading the invite in my mailbox my imagination was immediately triggered.  This time around we were not invited to Phantom at the Opera, but to a Phantom ginning night in the mystical Knysna forest. It was time to broaden our horizons and travel to Knysna for the experience.  And what an experience it was!    The setting at The Cabin at Simola was exquisite with a view over the estuary to the one side and the haunting beauty of the Knysna forest on the other side, while sipping on some handcrafted gin. Life cannot get any better! The story of how the husband and wife team of Karel and Chantal started off in Worcester distilling gin in their living room to where they arrived at the name of Phantom for their gin is truly an inspiring story interlocked with all the mysteries the Knysna forest has to offer.  This includes the… Read more >
